Overview: Tanzania Visa Policy
Tanzania offers tourist visas to citizens of most countries. The visa policy underwent significant reform in 2016 with the introduction of the online eVisa system. In 2024, Tanzania also introduced a new East Africa Tourist Visa that grants access to Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda on a single visa — excellent value for combined itineraries.
Visa-on-arrival is still available at major ports of entry, including Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), and Zanzibar Airport (ZNZ), but the eVisa is strongly recommended to avoid long queues.

Types of Tanzania Visas
Single Entry Tourist Visa
Valid for 90 days, single entry. Most common visa for safari and holiday visitors.
Multiple Entry Tourist Visa
Valid for 12 months, multiple entries. Ideal for frequent visitors or itineraries crossing multiple countries.
East Africa Tourist Visa
Tanzania + Uganda + Rwanda. 90-day multiple entry across all three countries. Excellent for gorilla + safari combos.
Transit Visa
For passengers transiting through Tanzania to another destination. Valid for 7 days.
Visa-Free Countries
Citizens of certain countries do not require a visa to enter Tanzania for stays of up to 90 days. These include most East African Community (EAC) member states and select other nations:

eVisa Application Process
Step-by-Step Guide
Go to eservices.immigration.go.tz — the only official Tanzanian government eVisa portal. Beware of third-party scam websites.
Register with your email address and complete the application form with personal details, travel dates, and accommodation information.
Passport bio-data page (valid 6+ months), passport-sized photo (white background), return flight ticket, and proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter).
Pay securely online by credit/debit card. Tourist Single Entry: $50. Multiple Entry: $100. East Africa Tourist Visa: $100.
Processing takes 3–10 business days. You'll receive your approved eVisa by email. Print it and carry it with your passport — it will be scanned at the port of entry.
Required Documents for Entry
- Valid passport — must have at least 6 months validity beyond your intended stay and at least 2 blank pages
- Tanzania eVisa or visa stamp — either pre-approved eVisa or visa obtained on arrival
- Return/onward ticket — proof that you are leaving Tanzania
- Proof of accommodation — hotel booking confirmation or official invitation
- Sufficient funds — immigration may ask about finances. Recommend $50–100 per day
- Yellow fever certificate — if arriving from or transiting through a yellow fever risk country
- COVID-19 documentation — check current requirements at time of travel

Zanzibar — Separate Entry
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania with its own immigration procedures. While your Tanzania visa covers mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, you will go through a separate immigration check when arriving in Zanzibar — even on a domestic flight from the mainland. This is routine and usually takes only a few minutes.
✅ No separate Zanzibar visa is required for holders of a valid Tanzania visa. Simply present your passport and Tanzania visa at the Zanzibar immigration desk.
Health Requirements
Yellow Fever Vaccination
Tanzania requires proof of yellow fever vaccination if you are arriving from or transiting through a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. This includes Kenya, Uganda, and many West and Central African nations. Carry your International Certificate of Vaccination (Yellow Card).
Malaria Prevention
Tanzania is a malaria-risk country. Consult your doctor at least 4–6 weeks before travel to discuss appropriate antimalarial medication and prophylaxis. Use insect repellent, sleep under mosquito nets, and wear long sleeves at dawn and dusk.
