Safari Questions
Tanzania is a year-round destination, but the best overall time for wildlife viewing is during the dry season: June to October and January to March. The Great Migration in the Serengeti is most dramatic from July to September when wildebeest cross the Mara River. The "green season" (November–May) offers lush landscapes, fewer tourists, lower prices, and excellent birdwatching. Ask us which season is best for your specific interests.
Tanzania is home to an extraordinary diversity of wildlife. The "Big Five" (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino) can be seen in multiple parks. Other iconic species include cheetah, wild dog, giraffe, zebra, hippo, crocodile, wildebeest, hyena, and over 1,000 bird species. Ngorongoro Crater offers the best chance of seeing all Big Five in a single day.
All our safari vehicles are purpose-built 4x4 Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs for game viewing, comfortable seats (maximum 6–7 passengers), charging points, and cool boxes for beverages. Vehicles are regularly serviced, fully insured, and equipped with first aid kits, communication devices, and emergency water supplies.
Yes, Tanzania is one of Africa's safest safari destinations. Our guides are highly experienced and trained in wildlife safety. All activities follow strict park regulations. Our vehicles are equipped with emergency communication devices, and all guests are covered by AMREF Flying Doctors emergency evacuation insurance. We have an outstanding 15+ year safety record.
Absolutely! Tanzania is a wonderful family destination. Most parks welcome children of all ages on game drives. We offer family-friendly itineraries with age-appropriate activities, shorter game drive days, and family suites or cottages. National parks typically charge reduced children's fees (under 15). Some exclusive lodges have minimum age requirements, which we'll advise on when planning your trip.
We offer the full spectrum of accommodation: basic/budget campsites ($30–50/night), comfortable mid-range lodges ($150–300/night), premium tented camps ($300–500/night), and ultra-luxury lodges and exclusive camps ($500–1,500+/night). We'll match your accommodation choice to your budget and ensure quality at every level.
Our standard safari packages include: airport pick-up and drop-off, all accommodation, all meals as specified (full board in parks), park entrance fees, professional guide and driver, 4x4 safari vehicle, fuel, and bottled water. Not included: international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, alcoholic beverages, tips, and personal expenses. We provide a complete inclusion/exclusion list with every quote.

Kilimanjaro Questions
No technical mountaineering skills or equipment are required. Kilimanjaro is a trekking peak β€” the routes are hiking trails, not climbs. However, you do need to be in good physical condition. Regular hiking, jogging, and cardio exercise for 3–6 months before the climb is strongly recommended. The primary challenge is altitude, not terrain.
Altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness/AMS) is caused by the reduced oxygen at high elevations. Symptoms include headache, nausea, fatigue, and dizziness. Prevention strategies include: choosing a longer route (7–9 days) for better acclimatization, trekking slowly ("pole pole"), staying hydrated, sleeping well, taking Diamox (acetazolamide) if prescribed by your doctor, and descending immediately if symptoms worsen. Our guides are trained in altitude illness recognition and response.
For first-time climbers, we recommend the 7-day Machame Route (most scenic, 87% success rate) or 8-day Lemosho Route (highest success rate at 90%, best acclimatization). The Marangu Route is the only one with hut accommodation but has a lower success rate. The Northern Circuit (9 days) has the highest success rate of 95% for those with more time. We'll help you choose based on your fitness and available days.
Essential gear includes: warm sleeping bag (rated to -15Β°C), layering system (thermal base layers, fleece, waterproof jacket and trousers), hiking boots (broken in!), trekking poles, headlamp, sun protection, and gloves/hat. We provide a complete gear checklist upon booking. Some equipment (sleeping bags, trekking poles, gaiters) can be hired in Arusha or Moshi if you prefer to travel light.
We strictly adhere to the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) guidelines for fair porter treatment. For a solo trekker, you'll typically have 1 lead guide, 1 assistant guide, 1 cook, and 3–4 porters. The ratio scales up with group size. Each porter carries a maximum of 20kg (KPAP regulation) plus their own 5kg personal gear. Our porters are professionally equipped, insured, and fairly paid.
Our summit success rates exceed the industry average due to our experienced guides, quality acclimatization scheduling, and supplemental oxygen availability. By route: Northern Circuit 95%, Lemosho 90%, Machame 87%, Rongai 80%, Marangu 73%, Umbwe 65%. Choosing a longer route significantly improves your chances. Our overall success rate across all routes is approximately 87%.

Zanzibar Questions
Zanzibar is a year-round destination. The best weather is during the dry season: June–October (cool and dry, low humidity) and December–February (hot and sunny). The long rains (masika) fall March–May, and short rains (vuli) fall in November. Even in the "rainy season," showers are usually brief and often don't disrupt beach activities. Peak season (July–August and Christmas) is priciest and busiest.
No. Your Tanzania mainland visa covers Zanzibar as well. However, Zanzibar has its own immigration checkpoint even for domestic arrivals from mainland Tanzania. You'll simply present your passport and Tanzania visa when arriving β€” it's usually a very quick process taking just a few minutes.
Zanzibar is generally very safe for tourists. Petty theft can occur in busy areas like Stone Town's markets β€” use a money belt, don't flash expensive items, and stay aware of your surroundings. Dress modestly when away from beach areas out of respect for local Muslim culture. As with any destination, use common sense and follow your guide's advice. We provide full safety briefings to all our Zanzibar guests.
Zanzibar is a Muslim-majority island. At beach resorts, swimwear is perfectly acceptable. However, when visiting Stone Town, markets, mosques, or inland villages, dress modestly β€” cover shoulders and knees. Women may wish to carry a light scarf. This is both respectful and will result in a more welcoming experience from local residents.

Practical Travel Questions
The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the local currency. However, US Dollars (USD) are widely accepted β€” especially in tourist areas, national parks, lodges, and for visa fees. Euros and British Pounds are accepted at most lodges and larger establishments. We recommend bringing US Dollars in small denominations (under $50 notes). ATMs are available in Arusha, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar.
Tipping is an important part of income for safari guides, drivers, lodge staff, and Kilimanjaro crew. Recommended tips: Safari guide/driver: $10–20/day; Lodge staff: $2–5/day (shared tip box); Kilimanjaro head guide: $20–25/day; Assistant guide: $15–20/day; Cook: $10–15/day; Porters: $8–10/day. Tips are given in cash (USD or TZS) on the last day. We provide a detailed tipping guide with your booking confirmation.
Recommended vaccinations include: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Yellow Fever (required if coming from endemic countries), and ensuring standard vaccinations (Tetanus, Measles) are up to date. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended β€” consult your doctor about Malarone, Doxycycline, or Lariam at least 4–6 weeks before travel. We recommend visiting a travel health clinic 6–8 weeks before departure.
Tanzania uses 230V/50Hz power. Plugs are primarily Type G (UK 3-pin) on the mainland and Zanzibar. Type D (round 3-pin) is also found in older buildings. Bring a universal adapter. Many safari lodges have limited power hours or use solar β€” charge all devices during available hours. Kilimanjaro camps rely on portable chargers and solar panels β€” bring a power bank.
Mobile coverage (Vodacom, Airtel, Tigo) is good in cities, towns, and most tourist areas. In remote parks (Katavi, Mahale, Ruaha, deep Serengeti), coverage is limited or non-existent β€” which is part of the wilderness experience! Most lodges offer WiFi, though speeds in remote areas can be slow. Local SIM cards are cheap and easy to obtain at the airport. On Kilimanjaro, coverage exists on lower slopes and the southern approach but not near the summit.
Swahili (Kiswahili) is the national language and widely spoken by all Tanzanians. English is the second official language and is spoken fluently by most people working in tourism, hotels, and business. Our guides all speak excellent English (and many speak additional languages including German, French, Italian, and Spanish). Learning a few Swahili greetings (Jambo! Habari? Asante sana!) is appreciated and fun!
Our standard policy: 90+ days before departure β€” full refund minus booking fee; 60–89 days β€” 70% refund; 30–59 days β€” 50% refund; under 30 days β€” non-refundable. We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance that covers cancellation. We will always try to reschedule or offer credit before applying cancellation fees. Please refer to our Terms & Conditions for full details.
We strongly recommend β€” and in some cases require β€” comprehensive travel insurance that covers: medical expenses, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation, and lost luggage. We partner with leading insurance providers and include AMREF Flying Doctors emergency evacuation coverage with all our safaris and Kilimanjaro climbs. Visit our AMREF & Insurance page for more details and to purchase coverage.
